While in Japan on the trip of a bento lover’s lifetime, we were invited by 8th Generation proprietor, Junichi Higuchi, to visit Benmatsu, the oldest bento shop in the world. in It’s 176 year history, Benmatsu, has not changed a single recipe. Their dedication to providing a taste of old Tokyo is unwavering, even as modern times have changed the palates of new generations. Benmatsu, founded in 1810 as a restaurant named Higuchiya in the Nihonbashi neighborhood of Tokyo near the original fish market that predated Tsukiji, popular for its generous portions was a thriving business, but the fish market workers, who were short on time, had to leave their seats before they could finish their meals so they started wrapping the leftover food in thin wooden sheets or bamboo leaves for customers to take home, which proved to be very popular and the number of customers requesting take-out portions increased. During the time of the second generation, Takejiro, they began selling lunches wrapped in bamboo leaves from the start, and during the time of the third generation, Matsujiro, the restaurant evolved into what is now the oldest existing bento shop in Japan. We are so honored to be the only “shop” to ever collaborate with this iconic Tokyo bento shop. We will be interpreting their most popular bento named Namiroku. This bento features, Swordfish Teriyaki, Tamagoyaki(rolled omelette), Simmered Vegetables(Wheat Gluten, Lotus Root, Taro, Satsuma Age(Fried Fish Balls), Bamboo Shoot, Shiitake Mushroom, Snow Peas, and Spicy Simmered Ginger). Additionally, a sweet bean paste called Kinton and a separate box of our claypot Koshihikari rice topped with a very special Kari Kari Ume will accompany the Namiroku. This is a one time only offering so be sure to reserve yours before supplies run out as we will only have 50 available. Pre-orders are open now for June 1st Delivery.
